Quick answer
What cooling tower is best for a heavy engineering plant?
Most heavy engineering plants use an induced draft FRP cooling tower. It handles the varied loads of induction furnaces, heat treatment, hydraulics and compressors, installs quickly and needs little maintenance.
Where cooling water picks up oil or scale, for example from quench tanks or open circuits, splash fill and a crossflow design are easier to keep clean. Large plants may choose RCC or wooden towers.
Applications
Where cooling towers are used in heavy engineering plants
Forging, fabrication and machining shops run many hot, hard-working machines, and most of them depend on a steady supply of cooling water.

Induction and arc furnaces
Cools furnace coils and power supplies, usually through a heat exchanger or closed loop.
Heat treatment and quenching
Cools quench tanks and heat treatment furnace components.
Hydraulic presses
Cools hydraulic oil on forging, forming and pressing machines.
Machine tools
Cools coolant and spindle systems on large machining centres.
Air compressors
Cools the compressors that supply plant air to workshops.
Welding and test facilities
Cooling for welding equipment, test beds and engine test rigs.
Challenges
Cooling tower challenges in heavy engineering, and how we design for them
Engineering plants have uneven, shift-based loads and cooling water that often picks up oil and scale. These are the conditions we design around.
Challenge
Oil and scale in open circuits
How we design for it
Splash fill and crossflow designs that tolerate dirtier water and are easy to clean.
Challenge
Varying, shift-based loads
How we design for it
Multi-cell or multi-fan layouts that can step capacity up and down with the load.
Challenge
Critical furnace cooling
How we design for it
Reliable towers built to CTI standards, with spares available from the same manufacturer.
Challenge
Limited space in workshops
How we design for it
Compact counterflow cells sized to the available area, including rooftop-friendly FRP.
Challenge
Hard make-up water
How we design for it
Fill and materials selected against your water analysis to limit scaling.
Challenge
Ageing cooling towers
How we design for it
Repair and reconstruction of existing towers of any make.
Tower types & materials
Which cooling tower suits your engineering plant?
We manufacture all three materials in-house, so we recommend the one that fits your duty, not the one we happen to make.
| Feature | FRP cooling tower | RCC cooling tower | Wooden cooling tower |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Most engineering plant duties | Large, permanent plants | Economical large-flow cooling |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent – no rust; suits chemical, coastal and seawater duty | Very good – concrete structure with HDG / SS hardware | Good – CCA-treated timber with HDG / SS hardware |
| Models | 98 | 92 | 107 |
| Capacity | Up to 6,000 m³/hr per cell (pultruded) | Sized to project | 45 – 5,000 m³/hr per cell |
| Civil work | Minimal – FRP or RCC cold water basin | Civil structure built locally from our drawings | RCC cold water basin by purchaser (drawings provided) |
Materials and fill are chosen for your cooling water quality and confirmed during design.
| Component | Material of construction |
|---|---|
| Structure and casing | FRP (or RCC / treated timber) |
| Fill | PVC film or splash fill |
| Drift eliminator | PVC, cellular or blade type |
| Nozzles | Polypropylene (PP) |
| Hardware | Stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised MS |
| Fan | Cast aluminium alloy or GRP blades |
| Fan cylinder | FRP |
| Electric motor | To suit your site standards and area classification |

FAQ
Cooling towers for heavy engineering: FAQs
Which cooling tower is best for a heavy engineering plant?
An induced draft FRP cooling tower suits most engineering plants. Where the water picks up oil or scale, splash fill and a crossflow design are easier to keep clean.
Can a cooling tower cool an induction furnace directly?
Induction furnace coils usually need very clean water, so they are normally cooled through a closed loop with a heat exchanger, with the cooling tower on the open side. We size the tower for the total heat load.
What fill is best if the water picks up oil or scale?
Splash fill tolerates dirtier water better than fine film fill and is easier to clean. We recommend a fill after reviewing your water quality.
Can you install a cooling tower on a roof?
FRP cooling towers are light, which keeps structural loads low. We confirm the operating weight so your structural engineer can check the roof or platform.
Can you repair an existing cooling tower?
Yes. We repair and reconstruct cooling towers of any make, and supply spares such as FRP fans, fills, nozzles, drift eliminators, fan stacks and gearboxes.
What details do you need for a quotation?
We need the circulating flow rate (or heat load), hot and cold water temperatures, the design wet-bulb temperature for your site, your make-up water analysis, and details of the available space and power supply.
