Quick answer
What cooling tower is best for a distillery?
Most distilleries choose an induced draft FRP cooling tower. Fermenter cooling and distillation condensers create a large, steady heat load, and FRP resists the acidic, humid conditions around a distillery without rusting.
Fermentation needs cooling water close to a set temperature to keep yeast productive, so the tower should be designed for your hottest-season wet-bulb. Large grain and molasses distilleries often use multi-cell FRP, RCC or wooden towers.
Applications
Where cooling towers are used in distilleries
From fermentation to distillation and product cooling, almost every stage of a distillery rejects heat to the cooling water circuit.

Fermenter cooling
Removes the heat released during fermentation so yeast stays in its working temperature range.
Distillation column condensers
Condenses alcohol vapour from analyser, rectifier and other columns.
Spirit and product coolers
Cools spirit, ENA and product streams before storage.
Mash and molasses cooling
Cools mash and diluted molasses before fermentation.
Evaporators and dryers
Cools condensers on spent wash evaporators and DDGS dryers.
Utilities and power
Serves co-generation turbines, compressors, chillers and DG sets.
Challenges
Cooling tower challenges in distilleries, and how we design for them
Fermentation is sensitive to temperature, and distillery surroundings are warm, humid and often acidic. These are the conditions we design around.
Challenge
Temperature-sensitive fermentation
How we design for it
Tower sized for your hottest-season wet-bulb so fermenters get cooling water at the temperature they need.
Challenge
Acidic, humid surroundings
How we design for it
FRP structure and casing that cannot rust, with stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised hardware.
Challenge
Biological fouling and slime
How we design for it
Fill selected for your water quality, with easy access for cleaning; works alongside your water treatment programme.
Challenge
Seasonal peak loads
How we design for it
Multi-cell layouts that let you bring cells in or out of service as the load changes.
Challenge
Organic contamination from leaks
How we design for it
Tell us what could enter the circuit and we check the compatibility of fill and materials.
Challenge
Limits on water use
How we design for it
PVC drift eliminators to reduce drift, and help estimating evaporation and blowdown.
Tower types & materials
Which cooling tower suits your distillery?
We manufacture all three materials in-house, so we recommend the one that fits your duty, not the one we happen to make.

FAQ
Cooling towers for distilleries: FAQs
Which cooling tower is best for a distillery?
An induced draft FRP cooling tower suits most distilleries because it resists corrosion in acidic, humid conditions. Large distilleries may use multi-cell FRP, RCC or wooden towers.
Why does fermentation need a cooling tower?
Fermentation releases heat. If the mash gets too warm, yeast slows down or dies and alcohol yield drops. Cooling water from the tower removes this heat through fermenter coils or plate heat exchangers.
How do I size a cooling tower for a distillery?
Add up the heat loads from fermenters, condensers and product coolers, or give us the total circulating flow with hot and cold water temperatures. We also need your site design wet-bulb temperature and water analysis.
How do you control slime and biofouling?
Fouling is controlled mainly by water treatment. We help by selecting fill to suit your water quality and designing for easy access to the fill, nozzles and basin for cleaning.
Can you repair an existing distillery cooling tower?
Yes. We repair and reconstruct cooling towers of any make, and supply spares such as FRP fans, fills, nozzles, drift eliminators, fan stacks and gearboxes.
Do you supply distilleries outside India?
Yes. We have exported more than 1,500 cooling towers to the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa. Our factory at MIDC Murbad is close to JNPT port for fast shipping.
