Quick answer
What cooling tower is best for a steel or metallurgical plant?
Steel plants usually run two kinds of cooling circuit. Indirect (clean) circuits for furnace panels, motors and hydraulics suit an FRP cooling tower with film fill. Direct (dirty) circuits for rolling mills, casters and gas cleaning carry mill scale and oil, so they need splash fill and an easy-to-clean design.
For large, permanent loads, multi-cell RCC or wooden towers give a robust structure. We size each circuit for its own flow, temperatures and water quality.
Applications
Where cooling towers are used in metallurgical plants
Melting, casting and rolling metal produce enormous heat loads, and cooling water reaches almost every part of the plant.

Rolling mills
Cools roll cooling and descaling water in hot and cold rolling mills.
Continuous casting
Cools mould and secondary spray water in continuous casters.
Furnaces
Cools panels, electrodes and transformers on electric arc, induction and reheating furnaces.
Sponge iron (DRI) plants
Cools the rotary cooler and gas cleaning water in DRI plants.
Gas cleaning plants
Cools scrubber and gas cleaning water on blast furnaces and converters.
Captive power and WHR
Condenser cooling for captive and waste heat recovery power plants.
Challenges
Cooling tower challenges in metallurgical plants, and how we design for them
Metal plants combine very high heat loads with water that carries scale, oil and solids. These are the conditions we design around.
Challenge
Mill scale, oil and suspended solids
How we design for it
Splash fill and crossflow designs for dirty circuits, with access for cleaning the fill and basin.
Challenge
Very high heat loads
How we design for it
Multi-cell RCC, wooden or pultruded FRP field-erected towers sized to your flow.
Challenge
Hot, dusty plant environment
How we design for it
Thermal design for your site wet-bulb, and fill selection that copes with airborne dust.
Challenge
Continuous 24/7 operation
How we design for it
Multi-cell layouts so a cell can be isolated for maintenance while production continues.
Challenge
Separate clean and dirty circuits
How we design for it
Dedicated towers for each circuit, each with fill matched to its water quality.
Challenge
Ageing towers
How we design for it
Repair and reconstruction of existing towers of any make.
Tower types & materials
Which cooling tower suits your metal plant?
We manufacture all three materials in-house, so we recommend the one that fits your duty, not the one we happen to make.
| Feature | FRP cooling tower | RCC cooling tower | Wooden cooling tower |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Clean (indirect) circuits | Large, permanent cooling loads | Dirty circuits with splash fill |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent – no rust; suits chemical, coastal and seawater duty | Very good – concrete structure with HDG / SS hardware | Good – CCA-treated timber with HDG / SS hardware |
| Models | 98 | 92 | 107 |
| Capacity | Up to 6,000 m³/hr per cell (pultruded) | Sized to project | 45 – 5,000 m³/hr per cell |
| Civil work | Minimal – FRP or RCC cold water basin | Civil structure built locally from our drawings | RCC cold water basin by purchaser (drawings provided) |
Fill and materials are matched to each circuit and confirmed against your water analysis.
| Component | Material of construction |
|---|---|
| Structure and casing | FRP, RCC or treated timber |
| Fill | PVC film fill (clean circuits) or splash fill (dirty circuits) |
| Drift eliminator | PVC, cellular or blade type |
| Nozzles | Polypropylene (PP) |
| Hardware | Stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised MS |
| Fan | Cast aluminium alloy or GRP blades |
| Fan cylinder | FRP |
| Electric motor | To suit your site standards and area classification |

FAQ
Cooling towers for metallurgical plants: FAQs
Which cooling tower is best for a steel plant?
Use an FRP cooling tower with film fill for clean, indirect circuits, and a splash-fill design for dirty, direct circuits. Large plants often use multi-cell RCC or wooden towers.
What is the difference between direct and indirect cooling circuits?
Indirect circuits cool equipment through jackets or heat exchangers, so the water stays clean. Direct circuits spray water onto the product or process, so it picks up scale, oil and solids. Each needs a different fill, and often a separate tower.
Which fill should be used for dirty water?
Splash fill tolerates suspended solids and oil better than film fill and is easier to clean. Film fill gives higher performance on clean circuits.
Do you supply cooling towers for sponge iron plants?
Yes. We supply cooling towers for DRI cooler, gas cleaning and captive power duties. Our clients include Sahanu Sponge & Power.
Can you rebuild an existing steel plant cooling tower?
Yes. We repair and reconstruct cooling towers of any make, and supply spares such as FRP fans, fills, nozzles, drift eliminators, fan stacks and gearboxes.
Do you supply steel plants outside India?
Yes. We have exported more than 1,500 cooling towers, and our steel clients include Habesha Steel Mills in Ethiopia.
