Quick answer
What cooling tower is best for a cement plant?
Most cement plants are well served by an induced draft FRP cooling tower with fill chosen for dusty conditions. Cement dust settles in cooling water and can clog fine film fill, so splash fill, which tolerates dirtier water, and easy-to-clean crossflow designs are often the better choice.
For large waste heat recovery (WHR) or captive power cooling, multi-cell RCC cooling towers give a long-life structure for continuous duty.
Applications
Where cooling towers are used in cement plants
Cement plants need cooling water for heavy rotating equipment and, increasingly, for power generated from kiln waste heat.

Mill gearbox and bearing cooling
Cools lube oil and bearings on ball mills, vertical roller mills and roller presses.
Kiln drive and roller bearings
Supplies cooling water to kiln main drive lube systems and support roller bearings.
WHR power plant condensers
Rejects heat from waste heat recovery turbines that generate power from kiln and cooler exhaust gases.
Captive power and DG sets
Condenser and jacket water cooling for captive power plants and diesel generators.
Air compressors
Cools the compressors that supply plant air for bag filters, packing and conveying.
Hydraulic and lube oil systems
Cools hydraulic power packs on roller presses, mills and crushers.
Challenges
Cooling tower challenges in cement plants, and how we design for them
Dust, hard water and continuous kiln operation shorten the life of a poorly specified tower. These are the conditions we design around.
Challenge
Cement dust entering the tower
How we design for it
Splash fill and crossflow designs that tolerate suspended solids and are easy to clean; fill selected to suit your site.
Challenge
Hard, high-TDS make-up water
How we design for it
Fill and materials chosen against your water analysis to limit scaling and keep performance.
Challenge
Hot, dry and dusty sites
How we design for it
Thermal design for your local design wet-bulb, with drift eliminators to limit water loss.
Challenge
Remote locations
How we design for it
Lightweight FRP towers that are easy to transport, with installation by our in-house team.
Challenge
Continuous kiln operation
How we design for it
Multi-cell layouts so a cell can be cleaned or serviced without stopping the kiln.
Challenge
Water scarcity
How we design for it
PVC drift eliminators to cut drift loss, and help estimating evaporation and blowdown.
Tower types & materials
Which cooling tower suits your cement plant?
We manufacture all three materials in-house, so we recommend the one that fits your duty, not the one we happen to make.
| Feature | FRP cooling tower | RCC cooling tower | Wooden cooling tower |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Mill, kiln drive and utility cooling | Large WHR and captive power cooling | Economical large-flow cooling |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent – no rust; suits chemical, coastal and seawater duty | Very good – concrete structure with HDG / SS hardware | Good – CCA-treated timber with HDG / SS hardware |
| Models | 98 | 92 | 107 |
| Capacity | Up to 6,000 m³/hr per cell (pultruded) | Sized to project | 45 – 5,000 m³/hr per cell |
| Civil work | Minimal – FRP or RCC cold water basin | Civil structure built locally from our drawings | RCC cold water basin by purchaser (drawings provided) |
Materials and fill are selected for dusty conditions and confirmed against your make-up water analysis.
| Component | Material of construction |
|---|---|
| Structure and casing | FRP (or RCC / treated timber) |
| Fill | PVC splash or film fill, selected for the dust load |
| Drift eliminator | PVC, cellular or blade type |
| Nozzles | Polypropylene (PP) |
| Hardware | Stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised MS |

FAQ
Cooling towers for cement plants: FAQs
Which cooling tower is best for a cement plant?
An induced draft FRP cooling tower with dust-tolerant splash fill suits most cement plant duties. For large WHR or captive power cooling, a multi-cell RCC cooling tower is a strong choice.
How does cement dust affect a cooling tower?
The falling water scrubs dust out of the air, raising suspended solids in the circuit. Dust can clog fine film fill and nozzles and settle in the basin, reducing performance. Dust-tolerant fill, regular basin cleaning and side-stream filtration all help.
What are the main cooling water uses in a cement plant?
The main loads are mill and kiln drive gearbox and bearing cooling, hydraulic systems, air compressors, and the condensers of WHR or captive power plants.
Can you supply cooling towers for a WHR power plant?
Yes. We design multi-cell RCC, FRP and wooden cooling towers for turbine condenser duty, sized to your condenser flow and site wet-bulb temperature.
How do you reduce water loss in dry regions?
PVC drift eliminators limit drift loss, and correct blowdown control reduces wastage. We can calculate the expected evaporation and blowdown for your duty.
Can you repair an existing cooling tower at our cement plant?
Yes. We repair and rebuild cooling towers of any make, including replacing clogged fill, nozzles and drift eliminators.
